Missy Elliott to be honored at Essence’s 2018 Black Women In Music celebration

Missy Elliot is set to Work It early next year when she receives Essence’s Black Women In Music honor.

The iconic rapper/producer will receive the honor that Essence first began awarding back in 2010 to recognize the accomplishments of both emerging and established artists and influencers during Grammy week.

According to EW, Essence describes Elliot as “a consummate visionary whose creativity knows no limits” and as someone who “has continuously pushed the boundaries in her work to shift the culture for the better across multiple industries including music, dance, fashion, film, television and art,” making it no surprise why she was chosen to be honored this year.

Vanessa De Luca, Essence Editor-in-Chief said in a statement that “the artistry of Missy Elliott cuts across generations underscored by her vast creative accomplishments and contributions to the culture.

So prolific is her work, she is an inspiration ro women all over the world. Missy’s energetic presence is truly magnetic and we can’t wait to celebrate her as one of the artistic masterminds of our time.”

Elliott has won numerous Grammy awards over the years and has crafted plenty of hit songs since her debut back in 1997 including but not limited to “Work It,” “Lose Control” and “Get Ur Freak On.”

She will join previous honorees of the prestigious award who include Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Rowland, Andra Day, Emeli Sandé and Sylvia Rhone.

Missy Elliott will receive the honor on Jan. 25 at the Highline Ballroom in New York City.
