Something special happens when women come together and share their experiences. The Inspire Series Redefining Beauty event, supported by Wana Wana Productions held on Sunday 30th November 2014 and gave women a platform to openly discuss and share concepts of beauty.
The event opened with performances by song writer Omolara and Femi Leye and poet/actress Titilope Sonuga. Later, Inspire Series host, Glory Edozien gave a short but inspiring talk on why she started the Inspire Series.
The first interview with Wana Udobang of Inspiration FM, set the scene for the day as she revealed her personal struggles with beauty and self acceptance. Starting from childhood, Wana discussed how her perception of self had affected her self-esteem and relationships with men. She talked about how she had over compensated with her character in order to make up for what she felt was a less than perfect exterior and how her path to self acceptance and realization of beauty took place.
The panel session with Jade Osiberu (creator and writer of Gidi-Up), Oreka Godis (Actress) and Lola Maja- Okojevoh (Makeup Artist) got quite emotional as Lola told her story of how peoples misconceptions of beauty had affected her perception of self and why discussing beauty is important for the next generation. Jade and Oreka also shared their journey to self acceptance and admitted the daily struggles involved.
But it wasn’t only the panelists who shared. Guests at the event also shared their personal beauty struggles. The biggest takeaway was just how similar women are in terms of our perceived flaws, why sisterhood is important, and why we must continue to have these sorts of conversation, not only for us but for the next generation of women.
The next Inspire Series Event will take place in the first quarter of 2015….join them for more open, honest and inspiring conversations
